International Day of Action for Rivers's picture

The International Day of Action Against Dams and For Rivers, Water, and Life was inspired and mandated by the participants of the First International Meeting of People Affected by Dams that took place in March, 1997 in Curitiba, Brazil. Representatives from twenty countries decided that the International Day of Action would fall on 14 March, Brazil’s Day of Action Against Large Dams. One of the goals for the Day of Action is to build and strengthen regional and international networks within the international anti-dam movement.

International Day of Action for Rivers Highlights

Canada: Creative Ways to Ensure that our Rivers are Protected!
Free Flowing Rivers Environmental Society, a non-profit that is based out of Vancouver, planned two exciting events to celebrate the Day of Action. On the 14th, they sent as many letters as they possibly could to the provinical government in protest of the construction of a private run-of-river power project and transmission line on the Upper Pitt River that would cut across pristine wilderness. South Africa: Protests to recognize the 11th Annual Day of Action for Rivers
The Dam Affected Communities Campaign in South Africa will spearhead protests against dams in three provinces throughout the region. The main area of focus will be the Inanda dam. Read more

Germany: Action Against the Ilisu Dam
German activists took against the controversial Ilisu Dam in Turkey on March 14. A joint declaration was presented to the Turkish government asking it to cancel its plans to build the Ilisu dam and instead, to develop a "truly participatory sustainable development plan for the region." Also, despite the rain, a "dam wall' was constructed as a visual protest. Read more

Chile: Protest Against the HidroAysén Project
There was a protest at the Baker River, as well as at El Salton River, where ENDESA is planning to dam. Additionally, Patagonia Without Dams lead a protest in front of La Moneda, the Presidential palace, in the country's capital city, Santiago, on the 14th. Chilean organizations that were present delivered a letter to Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, demanding that she promise to provide assessments of large hydro-electirc projects, ensure citizens' rights and also protect the Chilean environment from the attack of big corporations. Human Chain by the Bank of the Surma River
Sylhet Poribesh Andolon (SYPA) organized a human chain (Manob Bondhon) on the 14th of March in protest of the Tipai Mukh Dam and to remind people to that it is imperative to save the affected river as well as the other twenty five rivers of this region. Read more
